BIO
I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Psychological and Social Sciences and a Sociologist with interdisciplinary research interests spanning migration, Asian diaspora studies, ethnic inequities, racial justice, intersectional discriminations, and social research methods.
My work draws on critical race frameworks to examine the racialised dynamics of employment and immigration. A central focus of my work is how ostensibly neutral policies and organisational practices function to reproduce and entrench racial discrimination and inequality.
I am the recipient of the Mana Tūāpapa Future Leader Fellowship from Royal Society Te Apārangi. My fellowship research explores the political and structural dimensions of ethnic inequity in Aotearoa New Zealand. It interrogates how enduring colonial legacies and contemporary neoliberal policies intersect to shape inequitable outcomes for ethnic communities—and how these forces can be challenged through more just and transformative responses.
I am also involved in a Horizon Europe-funded project titled “Creating an Inclusive European Citizens’ Assembly.” In this project, I collaborate with a team of researchers from European universities. I lead a work package responsible for developing the theoretical and methodological foundation for this four-year initiative. This project aims to improve the participation of marginalised groups in deliberative democracy and citizens' assemblies.
Furthermore, I am collaborating with a group of Asian scholars in developing "Asian Diaspora Studies in Aotearoa New Zealand" - a multi- and transdisciplinary area of study, equivalent to Asian Australian Studies, Asian Canadian Studies, and Asian American Studies. I am co-editing a special issue on Asian identities and racialisation in Aotearoa with Dr Lincoln Dam, which will be published in Ethnicities (Sage).
