I am a marine ecologist with broad interests and experience in applied environmental science. My research background is on seaweed aquaculture and the use of macroalgal bioremediation to reduce nutrient concentrations in wastewater. Underpinning both streams of research is the development of innovative technologies and processes to enable commercial scale cultivation.

More recently, my research is focused on understanding and improving heat tolerance in kelp, with applications in aquaculture and restoration. I am also investigating ways that aquaculture techniques can be applied to upscale kelp restoration.

I have expertise in in macroalgal species/cultivar selection, domestication and scale up of target species, algal nutrient bioremediation, effects of cultivation conditions on algal productivity and biomass quality, and cultivation techniques for kelp aquaculture. I work closely with industry, and at scales ranging from tightly controlled laboratory experiments to commercial-scale trials on marine aquaculture farms and pilot scale land-based facilities.
