IMPACT HIGHLIGHTS

Dr Dalour Beg has made substantial contributions to sustainable materials and the circular economy, advancing natural fibre composites, biodegradable plastics, and environmentally responsible building and packaging materials. His research integrates advanced technologies—including additive manufacturing and design-for-disassembly—to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing material performance and lifecycle sustainability.

 

A signature achievement is his development of high-fibre-content 3D-printing filaments, which demonstrate record strength and stiffness among natural fibre composites. This technology has now been successfully licensed, underscoring its commercial value and the practical industry impact of his research.

 

Dr Beg’s work on recycled cellulose fibre foams has grown into a nationally significant research programme, recently funded through the MBIE Smart Ideas scheme. Developed in collaboration with Oji Fibre Solutions, SCION, Fisher & Paykel, Muka Innovations, and EMPA (Switzerland), the project aims to replace expanded polystyrene with recyclable cellulose-based foams. This innovation has the potential to reduce packaging-related carbon emissions five-fold and significantly decrease both plastic waste and unrecycled fibre going to landfill—supporting the transition to a circular, low-carbon packaging system while creating new commercial pathways for industry.

 

The broader impact of Dr Beg’s work is recognised across academia, industry, and policy. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles, with more than 8,000 citations and an h-index of 43 (Google Scholar). His leadership in sustainable materials was further acknowledged when New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) invited him to represent the country at the Climate Change Workshop hosted by Taiwan’s Ministry of Environment, reflecting the international relevance and policy significance of his research.
