BIO

Dr Mitchell Head is a neuroscientist and neuroengineer working at the intersection of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, consciousness research and mātauranga Māori.

He leads Ngā Waiata o Te Roro, an MBIE-supported research programme developing non-invasive, closed-loop neurotechnology to measure, model and modulate brain activity. His research combines wearable EEG, focused ultrasound stimulation, computational modelling and interpretable machine learning to investigate the neural dynamics underlying consciousness and brain states associated with mood, cognition, flow, cognitive fatigue and human performance.

His wider research explores culturally grounded approaches to biosignal measurement, Indigenous data governance, neuroethics and the responsible development of emerging brain technologies and potential treatments.

Dr Head is a 2024 Royal Society Te Apārangi Ngā Puanga Pūtaiao Fellow and co-founder and co-director of Te Kura Rau Mahara—Waikato Wearables Research Lab.
