Matthew is a limnologist with specific interests in nutrient cycling and the biology & ecology of problematic cyanobacteria in lakes. To address his research questions, he employs a multidisciplinary approach deriving output from both field & laboratory experiments and process-based models.

In his current role with The University of Waikato, as a lake ecosystem modeler, Matthew is involved in research relating to nutrient cycling, phytoplankton succession, and implementation of various management strategies in lakes. In his previous roles with Griffith University and The University of Queensland, he drove and collaborated-on a variety of projects including those related to toxic and nuisance cyanobacteria in lakes, nutrient cycling in lakes, pathogen transport and fate in lakes, sustainable management of water resources and aquatic ecosystems, erosion and intervention strategies in classical gullies, and most recently the impact of plausible future climate scenarios (CMIP6) on the sustainable management of water resources and aquatic ecosystems.

More broadly as a scientist, Matthew has a keen interest in data science and the philosophy of science. It is his goal to channel his research interests and multi-disciplinary approach to contribute to the sustainable management of waterways both locally and abroad.
