BIO

Kia ora koutou,

I am Dr Krishanu (Kris) Roy, Associate Professor and Director of Engineering Master's Programmes at the School of Engineering, University of Waikato. In this role, I provide academic leadership for our postgraduate engineering master's programmes while continuing my research in sustainable structural engineering, advanced construction technologies, and low-carbon infrastructure.

My career has spanned both industry and academia. I completed my PhD in Civil Engineering at the University of Auckland after earning a Master's degree in Earthquake Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee). Before returning to academia, I worked with Geodata SpA on underground infrastructure and structural engineering projects and later served as Research and Development Manager at Kiwi Steel Holding Ltd. I began my academic career as a Lecturer at the University of Auckland before joining the University of Waikato as a Senior Lecturer, where I had the opportunity to build research collaborations, supervise postgraduate students, and contribute to teaching and academic leadership.

Helping others has always been my guiding purpose. I believe knowledge has its greatest value when it is shared, and I am grateful for every opportunity to support students, mentor early-career academics, collaborate with colleagues, and contribute to the wider community. To me, the university is not simply a place to generate knowledge, but a place where people learn from one another, challenge ideas, and work together to address society's most important challenges.

My research interests include structural engineering, sustainable construction, sustainable building materials, embodied carbon assessment, environmental performance of construction systems, and data-driven approaches to improving the sustainability of the built environment. I enjoy research that bridges fundamental understanding with practical application and contributes to creating more resilient, resource-efficient, and environmentally responsible buildings and infrastructure.

Teaching is the most rewarding part of our profession. There is no greater satisfaction than seeing students and early-career researchers develop into confident, thoughtful, and independent engineers who go on to make their own contributions to the profession. Their success is far more meaningful to me than any individual achievement, and I consider it a privilege to be part of their journey.

I also believe that universities have a responsibility to serve society. Through teaching, research, and service, I hope to strengthen connections with industry, support our local communities, and contribute knowledge that makes a lasting and positive difference. If my work helps others grow, inspires curiosity, and leaves the engineering profession and our communities stronger than I found them, then I will consider my academic career to have been worthwhile.
