RESEARCH INTERESTS
My work surrounds the marketing/entrepreneurship interface (also known as entrepreneurial marketing) - the entrepreneurial actions that owner-managers use to create customer value. I focus on four topics (with areas of overlap) - namely, collaborative strategies (e.g., coopetition - cooperation among competitors), internationalisation, strategic orientations, and business models.
My research has been published (or is forthcoming) in leading outlets, such as the British Journal of Management, Entrepreneurship & Regional Development, the International Marketing Review, the International Small Business Journal, Industrial Marketing Management, the Journal of International Marketing, the Journal of Business Research, the Journal of Rural Studies, the International Business Review, the Journal of Strategic Marketing, the Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing, Marketing Intelligence & Planning, Qualitative Market Research: An International Journal, and the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research (among several others).
My work has involved quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods research designs - across a variety of empirical contexts. Furthermore, I have written several conceptual papers. A large proportion of my research has examined entrepreneurial marketing strategies (e.g., coopetition) in wine-producing regions, including in New Zealand (especially in Martinborough, Central Otago, Marlborough, and Auckland). For instance, I have examined the benefits and drawbacks of smaller-sized firms joining forces with their competitors to survive and grow within their domestic and international markets.
I am a Senior Associate Editor of the Journal of Strategic Marketing. I undertake this role in tandem with other editorial board positions (Industrial Marketing Management, the International Marketing Review, the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behavior & Research, the Journal of Family Business Management, the Journal of Vacation Marketing, and Dialogues in Entrepreneurship), ad-hoc reviewing for journals, conferences, edited books, and doctoral events.
Moreover, I sit on the Global Research Conference (formerly Symposium) on Marketing and Entrepreneurship Advisory Board and the Leadership Board of the Entrepreneurial Marketing Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association. Likewise, I am the Co-Chair of the Entrepreneurial & Small Business Marketing Special Interest Group of the Academy of Marketing. These roles allow me to work closely with early career researchers (encapsulating PhD students) in a mentoring capacity.
I have generated (and/or have been part of research teams that have secured) a total of over $NZ 2.78 million worth of research funding (from various countries). Such forms of funding have actively supported my publishing activities. Relatedly, I have reviewed and assessed large funding bids for different councils.
I have also been an Editor for a handbook on coopetition (the De Gruyter Handbook of Coopetition). Please see: https://www.degruyterbrill.com/document/doi/10.1515/9783111288987/html?lang=en&srsltid=AfmBOopFpsat1bfwqyEpnMVYvvlp71Nl6haSqFamOeSZHhGb5gwSDKSx
Through my research, I have academic connections (e.g., co-authors and former PhD students) that are located in various countries, including the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Israel, France, Italy, Ghana, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Portugal, and more.
I have been invited to deliver research seminars (and editorial presentations) at universities in different parts of the world - like the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, and New Zealand.
