BIO
I am a PhD researcher in the division of Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, specialising in Sport Studies. My research explores body image, embodiment, and place in women's swimming, with a particular focus on how adult women in Aotearoa New Zealand experience their bodies in swimming pool environment. In this research, I am using qualitative and creatives methodologies to help examine how swimming spaces and everyday swimming practices shapes women's sense of belonging. More broadly, I am interested in understanding how sport is experienced across different social, cultural, and spatial contexts. I am particularly interested in developing women-centred understanding of body image in sport, with attention to how experiences may be shaped by ethnicity, age, and rainbow identities, and in identifying changes that could make swimming spaces safer and more affirming.
