BIO
Abhishek is a Lecturer at University of Waikato's Tauranga campus at the Au Reikura School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences. He completed his PhD in Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, and was an Assistant Professor of Data Science at Chatham University, Pittsburgh, for 2 years before moving to Tauranga to start his position at the University of Waikato.
Abhishek's research goal is to create platforms and networks where local resident groups can collect, make sense of, and disseminate environmental and social information to address issues of pollution, environmental injustice, and surveillance. He uses low-cost sensor technology, socio-technical systems, and community science frameworks to design and implement projects to document and address societal barriers.
In his pedagogy, he recognizes that computing literacy is not just a classroom objective but also a vital skill for civic participation in today's world. Through the use of real-world problems and exercises, he builds core skills in data analysis, software development, and critical thinking.
Outside the university, Abhishek likes to stay active in community advocacy groups, artistic forays, and playing football.
